COURSE DESCRIPTION  
 
 
TFS 101 TRADITIONAL AFRICAN FESTIVAL THEATRE     
 
This course has its premise on traditional Festivals. Content, context and forms in African  
Festivals are examined while the interrelationship of such festivals with Western theatre  
form is evaluated. Another area of  significance is the common features of African  
festival theatre irrespective of their setting and cultural diversity. Some other area of  
focus is the feature that makes African Festival Theatre a total theatre form.  
 
TFS 103   INTRODUCTION TO DRAMA THEATRE         
 
This is an introduction course explaining the fundamental differences and relationships  
between theatre and drama as theoretical and practical concept. It also explains the  
relationship and differences between theatre and dramatic literature, as well as examines  
dramatic genres, movements backgrounds and theatrical productions in the three major  
world cultures of Africa, Asia and the West.  
TFS 104      HISTORY OF DRAMA AND THEATRE FROM THE
                   BEGINNING TO THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD                   
 
A brief outline history of their theories of the origins and the development of the theatre and  
its practice from the earliest ritual, oral and written traditions the world over up to the
medieval period.
 
TFS 121 BEGINNING THEATRE DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY  
This is an introductory course aimed at exposing the students to the basic concepts of
theatre design, its components and distinction between design and technology. Emphasis
is on functions; factors that influence theatre design and its realization; process of  
arriving at an effective theatre design and its realization on stage.
 
TFS 132 BASIC COMMUNICATION THEORY       
Definitions and fundamentals of the media arts. Application and effective use of the
techniques of radio, television, film and folk media in communication.
 
TFS 134 BASIC ACTING SKILLS  
This is largely a practical course which introduces the student to the unique and complex  
art of the actor. It employs creative exercise and ensemble technique in impacting the  
essential conventions of acting as they relate to movement, action, stage geography and  
the identification and management of the actor’s instrument. The training covers both
stage and film
TFS 171  INTRODUCTIONS TO FILM, RADIO AND TELEVISION DRAMA  (3 Units)
A study of the basic concepts of film, radio and television drama. Emphasis is on the  
development, nature, relationship and difference of these media of dramatic performance  
and the stage.  
TFS 201 AFRICAN DRAMA AND THEATRE: THE COLONIAL ERA   (2 Units)  
A study of indigenous and western theatrical activities in Africa during the colonial period
focusing on the role played by the church, concert parties, minstrels, popular music,
schools and universities in the period.
TFS 202 HISTORY OF DRAMA AND THEATRE:RENAISSANCE TO 19TH CENTURY  
A historical survey of the major events and development in the theories and practice of
world drama and theatre from the Renaissance to the 19th century.  
 
TFS 211   INTRODUCTION TO DRAMATIC LITERATURE THEORY AND CRITICISM  
An introductory study of the theories and critical methodologies that shaped dramatic
literature since Aristotle. Selected play text will be used for illustrations.
TFS 221 BASIC LIGHTING ANS SOUND DESIGN    
 
The course introduces the students to appropriate dramatic environment for a theatre  
production, thus emphasizing functions, process of arriving at such conclusive  
environment to house a dramatic action and describing such a vision in appropriate  
design language (line, mass, measurement colour etc). The technique employed by the  
design in communicating the vision to relevant production staff  (GP, elevation, detail  
drawing, coloured perspective and model) is also dealt with, and of course the working  
relationship between a designer, his artistic director and technical director is also  
emphasized.  
 
TFS 223  BASIC COSTUME AND MAKE-UP STUDIES  
A course that introduces the students to the basic knowledge of the types and functions  
of costume and make-up for the stage, television and film production. The significance of  
colour, texture, styles, meaning and setting on stage, television and film productions are  
emphasized. National and regional traditions of dressing as they have influenced the  
conception the art in the various media are put in focus.  
 
 

 

TFS 231 INTERMEDIATE ACTING

 
 
This course emphasizes problems and techniques of acting through history and practice.  
Appreciation of actor’s function as a creative artist through selected reading, physical  
and emotional skills synchronization of speech/ dialogue, movement, facial expression  
gesture with costume and make up are enunciated..  
 
TFS 232 BASIC NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION (2 Units)  
 
A study and development in performance of mime and pantomime. The focus is on story-  
telling using body manipulations in movement, dance segment, patterns, gestures, facial  
expressions and dance formation to achieve a desired goal.  
 
TFS 234  BASIC CHOREOGRAPHY AND KINAESTHETICS (2 Units)  
 
A practical study in dance pattern, style, configuration, formation, movement, steps, facial  
expressions, gesticulations and body synchronization in response to musical  
instrumentation. The emphasis is to create or express ideas, thoughts and feeling using  
the body as instrument. Several exercises are involved for the maintenance of body  
flexibility. The core issue is acquiring and developing dance movement skills.  
TFS 235 VOICE AND SPEECH PRODUCTION (2 Units)  
 
A study of the theory and practice of developing vocal techniques for the actor which  
include breathe control, enunciation, projection, resonation, and articulation of voice and  
speech for stage, radio, film and television productions. Students are engaged are in  
vocal exercises.  
 
TFS 252  FUNDAMENTALS OF PLAYWRITING (2 Units)  
 
The course equips the students with the basic skills and techniques of composing a play.  
Emphasis is on premise, plot, dramatic action, theme, subject matter, characterization  
and dialogue. Written exercises will be employed to test students’ grasp and  
comprehension of the elements in practical terms.  
 
TFS 260 CHILDREN’S THEATRE  
 
An essentially practical oriented course fashioned to tap children’s imagination through  
creative process such as role-play, dance, music news casting, recitation, pantomime  
and mime in order to encourage communication awareness and interaction among  
children at various levels.  
 
TFS 262  INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE FOR DEVELOPMENT (TfD)   (2 Units)  
 
A course that focuses on the background to and types of Theatre for Development as  
well as the methodological approach to achieving a specific goal in Theatre for  
Development programme.

A study of the development of literary drama and theatre in Africa since 1960. Emphasis  
is on how major African playwrights have used the arts of the theatre to respond to the  
cultural, social, economical and political situation in various regions of the continent.  
 
TFS 303  HISTORY OF DRAMA AND THEATRE; THE MODERN PERIOD    (2 Units)  
A historical survey of the trends in drama and theatre practice since 1870. The concept  
of modernism in theatre is explored through the various forms and context of Realism,  
Naturalism, Symbolism, Expressionism Absurdism etc.  
 

TFS 322  ADVANCED SCENE DESIGN

 
A course designed for capacity building development of scene design skills and  
techniques though script analyses to evolve appropriate concept, drafting (describing)  
such a concept. Through practical work on a pilot script the students learn details of  
drafting preparing material/ cost/ time estimate. THA 220, Basic Scene Design is a .  
prerequisite course. Students should be encouraged to within the semester use three  
plays which titles should be given at the beginning of the semester.  
 
TFS 324  COSTUME DESIGN AND PRODUCTION (2 Units)  
 
An advanced course on the techniques of producing costumes for the theatre, with  
period research, style, texture and colour studied in relation to the actor, director, and  
designer. Emphasis is also laid on the process of costuming for film and television  
productions.  
 
TFS 330  DANCE THEORY AND PRACTICE  
 
A theoretical study of dance in the continents of the world as a theatrical activities. The  
focus is on dance theories, history, functions, significance, accompaniments and  
paraphernalia such as musical instruments and vocal music.  
 
TFS 332  ADVANCED ACTING  
 
A study of the major theories and techniques of acting role, development and  
interpretations of character’s given circumstances, Students are required to produce one  
act plays to demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of the emotional and physical skills  
required for good acting.  
 
TFS 341 INTRODUCTION TO DIRECTING  
 
This course introduces the students to the basic concepts in play directing with emphasis  
on choice of script, script analysis, interpretation and theories of directing. Short scenes  
or plays will be used for actor-director communication.  
 
TFS 343  THEATRE ADMINISTRATION  
 
This course examines human and material resources management in theatre. Emphasis  
is on human relations in theatre, including production duties of the personnel of the  
theatre, advertising, publicity and processes involved in audience-engineering and  
management.  
 
TFS 344  STAGE MANAGEMENT  
A study of the principles and organizational skills required in handling stage and studio  
facilities both in radio, television and film production. The course focuses on the  
responsibility of a stage manager, his ASM and their relationship with the director, actor,  
designer and the run of a production.  
TFS 360  THEATRE WORKSHOP  
 
This is designed to expose the students to the experts in various department of practical  
theatre. Experts from within and outside the country may be invited from time to time to  
interact with the students on the principles and techniques of the art. Students are  
required to submit written report on such workshops.  
 
TFS 363  COMMUNITY THEATRE PROJECT  
 
A theatre for development course fashioned to equip the students with the knowledge of  
development issues in local communities. Emphasis is on the use of the theatre project in  
which people in the community will participate in order to sensitize, conscientize and  
mobilize them in solving their peculiar problems. The methodology involves interactions  
between a chosen local community and students of the theatre for the enhancement of  
data collection, scenario formation and subsequent play production. There shall be a  
follow-up exercise after two or three months. The course involves both theory and  
practice.  
 
TFS 370  FILM THEORIES  
 
Film theories, that is a series of ideas and general principles that seek to explain some  
aspect of knowledge of film making and film production are examined  
 
 

 

TFS 371  SCRIPTING FOR MEDIA THEATRE

 
 
A study of the principles of writing for radio, television and film scripts from concepts to  
final production scripts. The students is given in-depth insight into the dynamics that  
inform choice of style and the treatment of material in the creation of standard radio  
drama, documentary drama, and TV and film scripts.  
 
TFS 373  FILM EDITING  
Both practical and theoretical knowledge of the Mechanics and the art of film editing are  
taught  
 
TFS 381  RESEARCH METHODS  
 
A course in the basic approaches to scientific gathering of data, definition of  
methodology and analysis of material for research in area of the theatre following the  
latest historical and practical models for scholarly rediscovery and re-ordering of  
information from archives, library and field work.  
 
TFS 402  TOPICS IN THEATRE STUDIES  
 
A study of the major thematic categories of theatre as determined from selected works  
of principal playwrights as well as concepts of current interest in contemporary  theatre  
studies.  
 
TFS 404  ORIENTAL THEATRE STUDIES  
 
A study of theatre practice in the oriental world. This course aims at exposing the  
students to another face of  the theatre other than the western type. Special attention is  
paid to the development and practice of theatre in the oriental world.  
 
TFS 412  STUDIES IN DRAMATIC LITERATURE (3 Units)  
 
An intensive study of the plays of major world playwrights from Aeschylus to modern  
times. Emphasis is on how dramatic literature has reflected socio-historical economical  
and cultural ideas of societies. And its major contribution to theatre arts.  
 
TFS 413 THEORIES OF DRAMATIC CRITICISM (3 Units)  
 
A study of the leading theories and trends in dramatic criticism, their methodologies and  
approaches from the classical to the present time, using appropriate illustrative play  
texts.  
 
TFS 415  SHAKESPEARE  
 
A comprehensive study of the dramatic work of William Shakespeare. Emphasis is on the  
contemporary critical approaches to the study of Shakespearean plays. In this regard,  
some selected Shakespearean plays will be studied.  
 
TFS 424  ADVANCED LIGHTING AND SOUND DESIGN (2 Units)  
 
This course is designed to provide the students with fundamental knowledge of lighting  
and sound emphasizing the distinction between mere illumination and sound, and stage  
lighting and sound focusing on controllable production. In the process, students learn the  
processes of designing lighting and sound. Factors influencing performance of light are

TFS 440  ADVANCED PLAY PRODUCTION    
 
A course that enables students to apply critical aesthetic and interpretative skills to the  
production of a full length play on any given stage, such that expertise in any specific  
area of the theatre production  from acting, designing, lighting, directing, costuming, etc,  
can be demonstrated as students participate in a complete production process.  
 
TFS 451  MAJOR NIGERIAN PLAYWRIGHTS  
An in-depth analytical and critical study of the plays of major contemporary Nigerian  
playwrights. The structure and content as well as the social political exigencies that have  
influenced this dramatic tradition are examined. The students are exposed to the works of  
at least six difference playwrights  
TFS 455  ADVANCED PLAYWRITING  
 
A study of script development for the stage and other media. Emphasis is on  
craftsmanship in developing character, theme, plot structure and dialogue in a full length  
play. Students are required to submit one full length play at the end of the course.  
 
TFS 475  FILM CRITICISM                             (3 Units)  
 
Criticism and reportage, style, content and the contemporary film critics are studied and  
examined.  
 
TFS 476  FILM, RADIO AND TELEVISION DRAMA PRODUCTION (3Units)  
 
This course is designed to equip the students with the skills and sophisticated process of  
creating, directing producing and editing Film, Radio and Television Drama. Students are  
required to submit finished specimen of Film and Radio or Television and Radio  
production at the end of the course.  
 
TFS 480  PROJECT                                                    (4 Units)  
 
This is a research project in which the students are required to submit bound-copies of a  
reasoned essay in any practical or theoretical area of theatre studies.
